About Freemasonry?

Pure and Ancient Masonry is a journey through the three Degrees of Craft Masonry, leading up to entry into Royal Arch Freemasonry. Each step is marked by ceremonies, where members take on various roles to guide, teach, and reward the candidates on their journey. These experiences not only help build confidence and bonds amongst the membership, but at the same time offer valuable moments for personal reflection, growth, and development. We welcome members from all walks of life, faiths, and backgrounds to join us as equals and become a Brother amongst friends. Becoming a Brother opens the door to lasting friendships, it provides a deep sense of belonging and a clear purpose. It can enrich your life and expand your social circle.

Tradition, Values & Community

Freemasonry brings together centuries of tradition, personal growth, and charitable purpose. Rooted in integrity, respect, and brotherhood, it offers members an opportunity to reflect, learn, and contribute positively to their communities. Through ceremonial tradition, shared values, and a commitment to supporting others, Freemasonry continues to inspire fellowship and service in the modern world.

Origins of Freemasonry

Origins

Modern Freemasonry, with its rich ceremonial traditions, formally began in 1717 in England with the founding of the first Grand Lodge. In England today, Craft Freemasonry is governed by the United Grand Lodge of England. At its heart are the enduring values of brotherly love, relief (charity), and truth—principles that inspire members to grow morally, intellectually, and socially, while striving to make a positive difference in their communities.

Ceremonial traditions

Ceremonial Traditions

We have a rich ceremonial tradition that encourages reflection on life, promotes tolerance and respect, and reinforces a strong sense of civic and charitable responsibility. It also provides a valuable opportunity to keep the mind active, fostering ongoing learning, personal growth, and a deeper understanding of ourselves. Freemasonry is not a religion, but its teachings are compatible with many different faiths, welcoming individuals from a wide range of beliefs.

Masonic values and beliefs

Our Values

Masonic principles of integrity, kindness, and tolerance remain as relevant as ever in today’s fast-paced world. Our ceremonial tradition encourages a momentary pause, to reflect on our experiences and act with empathy and respect towards others. To help others if we can without detriment to ourself or connections.

Supporting your community

Supporting Your Community

Our values inspire members to give their time and skills, as well as raise funds for charitable causes. In 2020, the Masonic Charitable Foundation alone contributed more than £51 million—not only directly supporting those in need, but also funding a wide range of charitable projects aimed at making a lasting difference, at home and abroad.
